Chip washing

In the superalloy and titanium alloy recycling industry, the cleanliness of machining chips before remelting is a crucial issue to maintain the formulation of these high quality alloys. SFH offers alkaline washing machines or acidic washing machines to effectively remove hydrocarbons and contaminants brought in by cutting fluids present on the chips.

Functions of a chip washing machine

  • Recycle superalloys to a premium or aerospace-grade quality
  • Allow the recycling of rare and valuable raw materials, such as titanium or nickel from Inconels
  • Eliminate hydrocarbons from emulsions and cutting oils used in machining or turning
  • Maintain residual carbon levels on the chips below 0,01% to respect the chemical composition of alloys
  • Remove impurities such as salts (calcium, potassium, etc.) brought in by emulsion water
  • Dry the chips to allow them to be safely reintroduced into furnaces and remelted

Alkaline washing of chips from machining superalloys, titanium, and specific alloys such as Inconel or René 65 is essential to ensure compliance with their chemical composition during recycling and revalorization in foundries.

SFH designs these custom chip washing machines for each application. They effectively remove hydrocarbons and impurities, ensuring the cleanliness of chips, which, after remelting, will meet the high and precise metallurgical requirements of these superalloys.

At the time of bidding, SFH determines the most environmentally friendly chemicals to use through testing, and in collaboration with the end user. We support our clients in optimizing their chip washing and recovery operations from A to Z to achieve the required recycling performance of these superalloys.
